What Does 'Active UMF' Mean?
The UMF or 'Unique Manuka Factor' refers to natural components with unique properties that are present within UMF Manuka honey. All types of honey contain similar natural components, but within regular honey the special properties can vary widely and are not always as reliable. Every batch of Manuka honey is sent to an independent commercial laboratory for testing to make sure that it contains the UMF, and also to measure the strength of this special property. Rated on a numeric scale, a honey with a rating of 10 or higher has reliable health sustaining properties, and the higher the number the stronger and more reliable the properties of the honey. Once a batch has been tested and verified it is given a UMF rating and referred to as 'Active'.
