VW Kafer 1302 Ls Cabriolet by Revell from £26.99
Over 21 million Beetles were sold world-wide in numerous models with a wide variety of body types. Thus 1970 represented a turning point in the Beetle marketing policy. With the fully redesigned type 1302 (1.2 and 1.3 litre engines) and 1302 S (1.6 litre version) a new line was launched. The new model had a semi-trailing arm rear axle as standard, which gave it a techni-cally extravagant chassis. The engine was also changed: the greater overall height required a more convex bonnet. The new more powerful 1.6 litre en-gine with twin-port cylinder head delivered all of 50 bhp. The open-body variant, the 1302 S, received an extremely positive response. The much sought after Cabrio the bodywork of which was made by Karmann of Os-nabrück, was only available in the deluxe L version. It reached a maximum speed of 130 km/h, despite its high unladen weight of 920 kg. The open ver-sion accelerated from 0 to 100 in a solid 22.5 seconds. The production fig-ures vouch for the popularity of the 1302 LS Cabrio; Karmann made a splen-did total of 24,317 in 1971alone, the next to last year it was produced.
