The Soviet T-72 counts as one of the most important Soviet battle tanks in addition to which it was distributed world-wide. It stood out due to its innovations, reliability and above all its powerful weapons system. The T-72B that appeared in 1985 was further developed by stronger and more effective turret armour. In addition the T-72B now had the capability to fire type "9K120 Svir" guided missiles. Later it was also fitted with additional protection in the form of so-called EDZ (explosive reactive armour) units. These explosive charges could reduce or totally prevent the penetration of warheads.
