Father Ebb Vandyke lives with the rest of the family on the ’Rose of Sylvania’; travelling up and down the river chatting to everyone he meets. He hates rubbish and is always telling people to keep the riverbank tidy. Mother Flo Vandyke helps to navigate the ‘Rose of Sylvania’, but her main job is teaching everybody, no matter how old, how to swim. She starts her classes by stressing how dangerous the river can be. Brother Brook Vandyke is forever in trouble, not because he’s naughty, but just plain nosey. He even got his head caught in a large storage jar trying to find out what was inside. Sister Spring Vandyke is very artistic and is responsible for all the decorations on the outside of their home. After leaving school she wants to train to be a painter just like her grandfather, Michael Angelo Vandyke.
