Supermarine Spitfire PRXIX by Airfix from £7.37

Supermarine Spitfire PRXIX

The PR.XIX was the last of the photo reconnaissance Spitfires to see service with the RAF. Supermarine received an order for 79 aircraft, the first being delivered on the 27th November 1944 and the last on the 18th May 1945. The aircraft was powered by a 2050hp Rolls-Royce Griffon engine and was unarmed for long range PR work in both high and low altitude operations in any climate.

The aircraft had a maximum speed of 445mph (716kph), at an altitude of 26,000ft (7925m), with a cruising speed of 280mph (450kph), which was about 27% of the maximum power. This gave a wide range of engine safety, reliability and also reduced maintenance. The PR.XIX’s saw service in the later days of WW.II and also in Malaya. On the 10th of June 1957, it was to fly the last operational sortie by a Spitfire in the RAF.
