By october 14, 1942, the Germans were close to the heart of Stalingrad with the Russian defenders pushed up against the Volga. Time was running out for the Germans as well - Morale was low, supply lines streched and flanks weakened.
On November 23 the russian's launched a counter-offensive and quickly pushed through the weakened German flanks and encircled Paulus' army. After 6 months of fighting, the batttle for Stalingrad finally ended on January 31, 1943 when Paulus surrended his decimated and staving army to the russians.
