Rupert, Rupert the bear - everybody say his name!
He is a white bear with a very distinctive outfit – red jumper and yellow checked trousers and a matching yellow scarf. This cartoon character was created by a lady called Mary Toutel as a cartoon strip for the Daily Express newspaper back in 1920. It is staggering to think he has been around so long and he is the only character from a cartoon to make it through World War II – as it was thought his removal would do more damage than good and affect morale adversely.
Rupert Bear remained as a cartoon strip drawing until the early 70’s when a puppet TV show was shown on ITV. This led to a fully animated series in the 1990’s and in 2006 a new series was created giving his look a bit of an update – he now wore trainers and his colouring changed to make him more of a tan colour. Some of his friends also received a bit of a make over too for more modern times. In addition, Rupert has a number of books written about his adventures. |

He is a thoroughly English bear living in a special place called Nutwood Village with his mum and dad, Mr & Mrs Bear. As he is, his friends or chums as he calls them, although animals, have a human form. His best friend is a badger called bill. Edward Trunk is also much loved and is an elephant, plus he has a mouse pal called Willie. He also loves to play with Professor who is great at inventing things, Tiger Lily who comes from China, Pong Ping (or Ping Pong) and Podgy Pig who likes the odd sandwich or two.
