Scalextric 2007 Catalogue C8169

Scalextric 2007 Catalogue C8169, celebrating 50 years of Scalextric Sets (1957 to 2007)) Fifty years of Scalextric is a remarkable achievement. It is fitting perhaps that this celebration of Scalextric should be dedicated to the memory of the inventor B 'Fred' Francis. His foresight and engineering simplicity created a model electric racing car system that has endured to this day with the basic concept being virtually unchanged. Fred's company Minimodels Ltd, was making clever and sophisticated mechanical tin toys most being powered by his own design clockwork motors. The range expanded later to tinplate model racing and sports cars with an ingenious keyless clockwork motor marketed as Scalex and Startex. After the original Scalex Ferrari 375 and Maserati 250F, car chassis were modified to accept a specially designed rear mounted electric motor fitted acrosss the chassis, with an insulated split wheel under the chassis at the front to act as the guide and also to pickup the low voltage electric current from the metal lined slot. This new toy was called Scalextric!
