P 1800 S

With a view to overseas markets and the USA in particular, in the mid-fifties Volvo were working on the development of a sports car. The designs for the new car were influenced by the success of the Karman Ghia. Consequently, following the German example, they aimed at an Italian design, but using the existing technology and body platform, in this case that of the Amazon. The sports Volvo with its long bonnet, low roof line and short overhang had the classic proportions of the coupé. The ultimate design came from the hand of Pelle Petterson, but still acknowledged its Italian origins. Striking features were the large front radiator aperture and the timeless elegance of the harmonious profile. Shown to the public for the first time in 1960 and available from 1961, this sporty Swede very quickly came to enjoy great popularity. On capacity grounds it was made first of all in Great Britain, then from 1963 after the new works went into production at Torslanda, it was again made in Sweden. From year to year Volvo made minor modifications to the car, but all the models had the same luxurious interior, well laid out instruments, good road holding and convincing handling. The 1969 models, designated the S series because the bodywork was again made in Sweden, now had a three-spoke steering wheel and the new 1954 cc B20 engine with 105 bhp capacity. The maximum speed was about 175 km/h. The car also found fame in the mid-sixties when Roger Moore drove the P 1800 in the television series "The Saint".
