Magic Magnets by Science Museum from £4.05
This pack links to the Electricity and Magnetism area of Launchpad and demonstrates how magnets interact with other materials to produce unexpected effects. Contents include: magnet, aluminium strip, plastic strip.
Contains a small example of a ‘rare earth’ magnet - the most powerful known. If you slide it down a metal slope, it slows itself down, even on a non-magnetic metal. This magnet creates something called an eddy current as it moves past metal. This has its own magnetic field which interacts with the magnet’s field and slows it down. This type of magnet has revolutionised electric motors and many other things. Electric model helicopters only exist because their motors use these magnets.
