Jaguar E-Type Sebring Winner '63

The Jaguar E-Type was shown for the first time at the Geneva Motor Show in 1961. The designer, Malcolm Sayer, had given this sports car an extremely long bonnet that contrasted strongly with the small driver's compartment. In addition to a favourable price the E-Type offered breath-taking performance. Jaguar did not plan a special racing version, but by 1962 a better one was already being considered. The 13 racing cars completed by Jaguar were designated "Lightweight" and were only sold to selected customers. The first two vehicles were made for the Sebring race in 1963, one for Briggs Cunningham and one for the British motor car distributor Kjell Qvale, the west coast Jaguar importer located in San Francisco. Both E-Types were transported to Florida by air freight. On arrival in the USA it was apparent that both models were wearing the livery designed for Cunningham. A pot of red paint was found by chance in a hangar at Sebring and the blue stripes were overpainted. Ed Leslie who had already driven an MGB for Qvale the previous year and Frank Morrill took the red and white car, to the starting grid of the 12-hours race. The Sebring race was contested extremely fiercely, not least due to the strong competition in the form of the AC Cobras and Ferrari GTOs. Leslie and Morrill had good chances of finishing in the first five but, due to a technical fault, they only made it to seventh place, one place ahead of the Briggs Cunningham E-Type and finished the race as winner in their class.
