Airfix Westland Navy Lynx Mk8 Helicopter by Airfix from £8.19
An advanced helicopter, the Lynx is the result of a successful Anglo-French partnership which began in 1967 and involved the two largest helicopter firms in Europe. Westland Helicopters in Britain and Aerospatiale in France.
Two basic versions are in production, the Naval Lynx and the Utility or Army Lynx. The naval version is in service with the Royal Navy and overseas customers including France, the Netherlands and Brazil. The role of the maritime Lynx is to find and attack submarines for which it is fitted with a variety of homing torpedoes and anti-ship missiles. To secure the helicopter to a ship's deck a pronged arpon decklock system is fitted beneath the fuselage and engages a grid in the ship's deck.
The Lynx's undercarriage is also designed for deck use, having steerable nose and main wheels to facilitate handling. Lynx's remarkable performance was demonstrated on 11 August 1986 when it set a new world helicopter speed record of 400.87 km/h (240.09 mph).
