Supermarine Spitfire Mk Ia: One of the most important modifications to the Spitfire was to replace the all machine gun armament with wing mounted Hispano 20 mm cannon. The first Spitfire equipped with single Hispanos in each wing was L1007 which was posted to Drem in January 1940 for squadron trials. These were known as the Mk IB, the eight machine gun Mk Is were retrospectively called the Mk Ia.
