The Lancaster was a high altitude night bomber but is most well known for it’s low-level raid on the Mohne, Eder, Sorpe and Ennepe dams, hence the term Dambusters! This caused extensive damage to food production in Germany. Bouncing bombs were used to rupture the dams – by rotating the bomb before dropping, the bomb skipped along the surface before impact. This attack improved the morale of the British public.
