A1 Pacific LNER Apple Green 4475 'Flying Fox' BL99040 by Hornby

A1 Pacific LNER Apple Green 4475 'Flying Fox' BL99040

Sir Nigel Gresley was most famous for his line of Pacific mainline express locomotives the first of which, the A1, entered service in 1922. The A1s quickly proved themselves to be very capable hauling heavy loads on the East Coast mainline. However in operation they proved to be inefficient in the consumption of both coal and water. A number of improvements were incorporated over several years but eventually all the A1s were rebuilt as A3s. 4475 ‘Flying Fox’ was, like many of the A1s and A3s, named after a famous racehorse. It was built for the LNER in April 1923. After the war it was renumbered 106 and then, following nationalisation in 1948, 60106. It was rebuilt to A3 standard in March 1947 and continued in service until November 1964.
