50 Years of the German Federal Armed Forces' Luftwaffe. The 3 most important Luftwaffe fighter jets of the past 5 decades in an anniversary package: 1.F-104G Starfighter, 2.F-4F Phantom II, 3. Panavia Tornado; The German Federal Armed Forces were established in 1955 with the Luftwaffe following a year later. The allied coalition began to crack following the Yalta conference in February 1945. Two years later the USA had already officially defined its role as the defender of all freedom loving peoples after the UdSSR had withdrawn behind its Iron Curtain.

From mid 1957 the German Luftwaffe, that was established in 1956, quickly increased its level of performance between the years 1962 and 1987 by introducing the Republic F-84F Thunderstreak - which was itself replaced gradually by five fighter-bomber squadrons equipped with the F-104G, enabling it to meet its NATO membership obligations. From 1973 to 1975 the Luftwaffe received a total of 175 F-4F Phantoms for service as fighters and fighter bombers. Between 1991 and 1996 10 fighters received upgraded systems and armament. In order to be less dependent on the USA, several European countries began to jointly develop the swing-wing Panavia Tornado in 1974. The Tornado was produced through to the 1990's and is still in service today in its IDS and ICR versions.
