Prostasan Saw Palmetto Capsules - a licensed herbal medicine containing the oil of Saw Palmetto berries. It is used to relieve the symptoms of an enlarged prostate gland in men.
Why do Men's prostate glands become enlarged?
This is part of the natural process of ageing. As men become older, changes to the way prostate tissue responds to circulating, hormones cause inflammatory changes to
take place in the prostate gland and , subsequently, enlargement of the gland. This is known as Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy (BPH).
At the age of 50, over 50% of men will have some symptoms associated with an enlarged prostate.
How can they tell if this is happening?
Symptoms of BPH include:
- Getting up frequently in the night to urinate
- More frequent urge to urinate
- Diminished, weakened stream
- A feeling of incomplete emptying of the bladder
What are the orthodox treatment options?
- Watch and wait - this is the treatment of choice for many men with mild symptoms
- Conventional drugs of BPH such as finasteride and tamsulosin - these are associated with side effects such as impotence and erectile dysfunction
- Surgery - apart from the pain and discomfort, this can cause impotence and incontinence. Surgery is the treatment of last choice!
Prostasan can be used as part of treatment option 1, or as an alternative to treatment option 2.
How Does Prostasan work?
Prostasan works for BPH in 3 ways:
- It inhibits production of the inflammatory type of testosterone.
- It blocks inflammatory testosterone from binding to receptors in the prostate.
- Prostasan's action in reducing inflammatory testosterone levels means less production of inflammatory chemicals all round.
It's very simple to use and works without any significant side effects.
What clinical evidence is there?
A Cochrane review published in 2000 looked at 21 randomised trials and concluded that Saw Palmetto provides clinically significant improvements in urinary symptoms and flow measures. It produced similar improvements to finasteride and was associated with fewer adverse events.
A study investigating the effectiveness of Prostasan recruited 364 men (average age 65) with BPH who had not previously been treated. Improvements were noticeable less than 4 weeks after starting treatment with Prostasan. Symptoms improved by an average of 35%, regardless of how severe the problem was. Those with the mildest symptoms improved by 42%, those with moderate symptoms 38% and even those with severe symptoms improved by 30%.
Quality of life also improved, with patients going from 'somewhat dissatisfied' with their urinary problems to overwhelmingly 'satisfied' after 8 weeks.
What is the importance of Saw Palmetto Oil?
We now know that it is the fatty acid compounds in Saw Palmetto which hold the active ingredients. This is why Prostasan is made from Saw Palmetto Oil. One capsule contains 320mg of the extract from organically cultivated Saw Palmetto berries and contains at least 84% fatty acids.
Does this mean that NOT all Saw Palmetto products are the same?
This is correct. Saw Palmetto products made from powders or dried herbal material will not contain as much of the oils and fatty acids as the 'oily capsule' of Prostasan.
Why Prostasan in a capsule form?
This is because it is impossible to keep the required amount of oil in any other form. In addition, we use a gelatine based capsule as this is the only way to give us the standards of stability we require for our products. Vegetarian capsules do not provide the same degree of stability for the contents of Prostasan.
