Emma Bridgewater Egg & Feather

This is another collection designed for Emma Bridgewater by Mary Fedden, a talented and much collected artist. Although this pattern it is a recent addition for 2011 it is actually a revival of a much loved older pattern, most probably back by popular demand. Occasionally you will find the design team at Bridgewater do this to allow you to top up your collections for any missing or damaged pieces and of course reintroduce the design to a new set of followers. This particular range is described as ‘Pieces you love, to use and enjoy forever’.

Emma Bridgewater’s Egg & Feather is a classic design of speckled eggs and bird feathers. The bird eggs have a base colour of brown and duck egg blue, and then are carefully speckled with elements of darker brown to black. The floating feathers look lightweight and elegant and bring the whole design together by incorporating grey as well as other brown tones. This is all topped off with a strong brown line to leading edges which helps frame Mary’s artwork beautifully. As the artwork for this set comes from such a talented and well respected pedigree then each item makes for real collectors pieces for the future. As ever each piece is made entirely by hand and with the design of intricate shapes and colours this pattern is really quite complex to achieve by hand sponging, making each egg and feather pottery piece completely unique.

Such a quintessentially English design it is perfect for Easter but lends itself to all manner of occasions. It mixes nicely with white toast and by incorporating some of the birds mugs into your set it brings an understated theme into your collection. Its classic design won’t age and makes it ideal for display. The plates are so beautiful in their own right consider using them as decorative pieces – buy yourself a plate stand and use the Egg & Feather plate in any room in the house on display – particularly suited to lounges, drawing rooms, and bedrooms. Or try the Egg & Feather mug in your bathroom as a toothbrush holder.

You can image this pattern in a farmhouse kitchen, displayed on dresser filled to the brim, or set out on a huge wooden table, the colourings working perfectly with the stone flag floors, and black or cream Aga. Pick out some of colours used in the pattern with your tea towels, blinds, napkins, or place mats. Or as the latest trend in kitchens is to bring in pieces of painted furniture –this set would look fabulous mixed in with a cupboard or island unit painted in the same duck egg blue, together with a big wooden block work surface to pull in the brown elements of colour. Or try painting the back of a pine old dresser in the same blue to bring out duck egg as your key accent colour and use the Egg & Feather Teapot and Jug as stunning focal pieces. This is massively popular in interiors at the moment and has been through the ages – so you won’t struggle to find matching accessories for this range.
