The brand started back in 1993 when Cath Kidston ventured into retail in a small way in Holland Park, London. Her initial product range focused on all that was vintage – from fabric and wallpapers through to old furniture (basically junk finds) which had been given a facelift to make them brightly coloured and funky – this became her trademark and soon she had established a cult following. From the success of these vintage ranges she gained the confidence to design her own prints – which began as a quirky take on vintage florals which remains until this day and it all actually started with an ironing board cover. The brand has taken off royal style yet, thankfully, Cath still runs the helm as creative director.
Her mugs, brought to you from Churchill China, make an affordable addition to your table setting. Perfect for Kitchens and her designs don’t look out of place in either the period home or funky pad! The pretty trademark chintzy floral has the essence of the 1940’s and 50’s, and retro designs include the quirky cowboys and racing cars themes. The Cockerel mug makes a perfect breakfast piece and roses are one of the flowers which are used a lot in her designs- for instance in the Spray Flowers mug.
Group together on tray, display in a cabinet/wall shelf, use to store cutlery or pens, or even have a drink out of them! Mix and match the designs for a true vintage feel. Don’t be scared of introducing bold, bright colours into the mix such as the Dotty Red Crush Mug as this will only enhance the look. Cath Kidston realised early on that dotty designs work really well in combination with the flowers, and sort of acts as a diluter in case things get a bit too florally and lets be honest keeps hubby a little happier before we chintz them to death! Mind you with these designs less does not necessarily mean more – the more you have the better in our opinion. Try mixing in fun cherry and strawberry too including the Strawberry Teapot which is a real eye catcher– delightful designs for all ages – from teens, for a new couple setting up house, mums, sisters, to grannies and ALL other ages.
What do the Cath Kidston China patterns say to you – we say a mixture of happy childhood days, visits to grandparents, days out at the seaside, giddy suburban life, pony club, an English country house and a little bit Stepford wives – all rolled up into one!
Best sellers include Provence Rose Mugs in either blue or green and the Strawberry Crush Mug.
