The Chestnut Bowl is based on the original dated late 18th Century, earthenware, glazed pale cream, this is commonly described as Creamware, Pearlware, Leedsware, China Glaze or even Salt Glaze.
The Chestnut Bowl is an inverted bell shape with a scalloped rim and a pair of intertwined cord handles with flower and leaf terminals, the high domed lid has a ‘fir apple’ knob, the sides are and the lid are pierced with a complex openwork pattern. The Chestnut Plate is circular with a pattern of openwork to outer rim with a moulded bead border.
Openwork is the process where patterns are formed of oval diamond, heart shaped or other shaped holes, each of which is individually cut out with a simple metal tool and usually known as pierced ware.
