A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens Audio Book, read by Selina Scott. The sale of this audio-book will raise funds to create Dickens education and arts-led initiatives in Yorkshire, celebrating Dickens love affair with the people and county of Yorkshire.
At Christmas in 2012, Selina led a team of volunteer fundraisers to raise enough money to successfully purchase a rare edition of A Christmas Carol in a nail-biting New York auction. Hidden from public view and now on display at York University, the specially bound edition was commissioned by Dickens for the wife of his friend, lawyer Charles Smithson, after his untimely death at the age of 39.
Every Christmas the book will go on tour around Yorkshire and our Dickensian Festivals, creating a Dickens trail to inspire and bring the magic of Dickens most famous book home.
There is a long-standing tradition that the office of Scrooge was based on Smithson’s office on Chancery Lane in Malton, and that various characters of Dickens were based upon residents of the area.
Selina Scott is an international journalist whose career in both the UK and USA has been ground breaking. One of the first anchor women in news and current affairs in the UK, Selina was also the first woman to launch Breakfast television for the BBC in Britain.
On November 5, 2012, the auction was held in New York that featured the signed edition of A Christmas Carol.
The 1844 edition is inscribed: “Mrs Smithson/from/Charles Dickens/18th April 1844.” It was a gift from Dickens to the widow of Charles Smithson.
Dickens was godfather to the Smithson’s child. The book is considered as physical evidence of Dickens’s close ties with Smithson and Malton.
