What is Pernaton?
Pernaton® is a range of products obtained from an extract which is sourced from the New Zealand Green Lippid Mussel (Perna Canaliculus). The extract is licensed to Doetsch Grether AG as perna® and then is used exclusively in the Pernaton® range.

Where are the Green Lippid Mussels sourced?
The area where the Green Lippid Mussels are grown is situated off the
coastline of the North Island of New Zealand. The Mussels are grown in the clean
coastal waters and even though the area already has a blue ocean Environmental
award, the ocean water, as well as the mussels are constantly monitored for
safety - bacteria, toxins and heavy metals.
The mussels are grown on long rope lines hanging vertically in the water, and are constantly checked and thinned out to ensure the perfect growing environment. They are then harvested at the peak of their condition and shipped immediately in refrigerated trucks to the manufacturing base, only a short distance from where they are grown, as freshness is essential to provide a high quality extract. on reaching the factory the mussels are put into a cold storage facility before being processed.
How is Perna® extract made?
The process used to create the extract originated over 30 years ago, and was
specifically designed to create a therapeutic product. it is a unique cold
extraction process which does not use heat (as this will destroy the active
components), chemicals or solvents. The extract is then freeze dried to ensure
quality and purity, before being milled to produce a fine powder extract. This
process was developed over several years using tried and tested time and
temperature parameters.

Are All Green Lippid Mussel Products the same?
Definitely not, many other Green Lipped Mussel products on the market today
contain mussels that have been steamed/cooked or which have been ground down
into a powder, using simple basic processes that destroy the essential active
ingredients. Some manufacturers even purchase the by-products from other
producers or mussel farms which are definitely not fresh, and therefore have no
therapeutic value.
Why not just include Green Lipped Mussels in your diet?
Unfortunately, whilst the mussels still retain some beneficial properties when
eaten they lose a large amount in the cooking process, and therefore you would
have to consume a very large amount of mussels in order to get any real
therapeutic benefit. However, we would never discourage you from eating them
fresh as they are delicious and nutritious.
How were the therapeutic benefits of the Green Lippid Mussel discovered?
Introducing John Croft
John Croft is one of the founders and innovators responsible for the early development and research into the unique New Zealand Green Lippid Mussel extract known as Perna. John Croft is a marine scientist and health product researcher, and is widely regarded as one of the world's leading experts on the lifecycle, farming methods and therapeutic uses of the New Zealand Green Lippid Mussel. John, was born in England, spent 10 years at sea, including 3 as a captain. He was charged with investigating the effects of pollution from estuaries on marine life by the British Government. That led to him setting up a laboratory to carry out fisheries research and meanwhile he completed his London University chemistry degree and extensive training in microbiology and trade waste analysis.
In 1972 he emigrated to New Zealand to help set up a marine farm and research hatchery for the cultivation of Green Lipped Mussels. Although the initial goal was to farm mussels for food, this then changed to exploring the therapeutic potential of these remarkable shellfish.
John Croft soon became responsible for the development and research associated with the Green Lipped Mussel extract and other marine based therapeutic products. he still works as a research and development consultant and as a marine science consultant, involved in designing and setting up marine farm operations and advising on water pollution matters, as well as lecturing in New Zealand and all over the World. He has written several books and holds a national certificate and higher national certificate in chemistry, is licentiate of the Royal Society of Chemistry and is a member of the Royal Society of New Zealand and Royal Society of Health.
What are the therapeutic benefits of Perna®?
Perna® is a multi functional and natural product which has
anti-inflammatory, chondro-protective and gastro-protective properties. It has
had significant success in treating a number of joint and muscle related
problems, not only in humans but in animals too. Research has shown it has a
greater range of beneficial effects than either Glucosamine Sulphate or
Chondroitin Sulphate.
Through early trials Perna® Green Lipped Mussel extract was shown to
have gastro-protective activity. It does not cause any harm to the stomach or
kidneys; it actually protects the stomach. It has the ability to reduce the
ulcerogenic effect of non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as
aspirin and indomethacin, whilst complementing the anti-inflammatory potency
i.e. they can be used together if need be.
Product Safety
Perna® Green Lipped Mussel extract is taken from a widely consumed
seafood. Routine monitoring of the waters and mussels comply with US FDA
Shellfish Standards. Every batch of Perna® extract is tested to
ensure that the product is free from environmentally induced pathogenic
contaminants. Perna® extract has been subjected to both toxicity and
teratogenic studies to confirm its safety as a therapeutic product. The studies
were conducted to the standard protocol used for pharmaceutical products.
Who Can Benefit from Pernaton?
People with muscle and joint problems

Sports People
Sports muscle recovery and training recovery actions have been found to be
improved with Perna® Green Lipped Mussel extract. A clinical study
(double blind placebo) found that Perna® Green Lipped Mussel extract
speeded up the recovery of soft tissue that had been damaged through sporting
injury. Tired leg muscles were exposed to a series of drop jumps to induce
muscle damage and it was found that peak muscle power was restored quicker and
to a greater extent in the Perna® group. Perna® Green
Lipped Mussel extract has an anti-inflammatory effect on muscles and tendons as
well as joints.
"I am a Physical Training Officer with the Irish Army and as a result
I have to deal with all levels of sporting activities. I handed out samples of
Pernaton Gel to twelve people with a number of different complaints ranging from
lower back pain to sports injuries with connective tissue damage and also sports
injuries during recovery.
All personnel stated that within a short time they had prolonged relief from
