What is Optimum Nutrition?

Optimum nutrition is giving yourself the best possible  intake of nutrients to allow your body to be as healthy as possible and to work as well as it can.
I Believe that the first step towards optimum nutrition is a healthy, balanced and varied diet. However a balanced diet is not a reality for all, and may not be enough for some. Many people, especially with modern lifestyles being as precious and demanding as we all know them to be, do not achieve a balanced or varied diet. For some people, for reasons of genetics and circumstances, more than just the recommended daily allowances (RDAs) of nutrients may be required - hence the importance of food supplements to help ensure optimum nutrition intake, where appropriate.

For this reason I have designed and formulated a range of supplements with the trusted experts at BioCare. These can be used to help ensure optimum nutrition and as an adjunct to a healthy lifestyle.

Essentials - Optimum Nutrition For Everyday

There is no substitute for wholefoods. Eat a varied diet containing as many varieties of fresh wholefoods as possible. If you feel you are lacking nutrients, consider appropriate supplements. If you want to supplement your diet with individual nutrients, always take a good all-round multivitamin and mineral as well.

An ideal diet should contain about 55% carbohydrate (choose slow release carbohydrates like dark green, leafy vegetables or root vegetables, fruits and wholegrain such as rice, whole-wheat pasta and bread), 25% fat (try to add a heaped tablespoon of seeds to a meal) and 20% protein (avoid too much animal protein and add servings of beans, lentils and other vegetarian proteins. Eat little and often - eat when you are hungry and not just out of habit. If you feel like snacking, eat fresh fruit with some raw seeds and nuts instead of sugar-rich snack foods.

Eat food as raw and unprocessed as possible. Cooking changes molecules in foods and can destroy valuable nutrients. Chew your food properly as this is the beginning of the digestive process and signals your body to produce the right sort of digestive enzymes in your gastrointestinal tract. Invest in good quality water. plumbed in water filters are the best. Drink at least 1 litre a day. Buy organic produce whenever possible. Steam your foods instead of deep frying and don't over cook dishes. Avoid alcohol, smoking and medical drugs as much as possible. Avoid any form of sugar, added sugar and white, refined foods.

Optimum Nutrition for a Healthy Weight

If you're too fat, don't blame fat. Cutting intake of fat does not always make a difference. Weight control is more to do with keeping blood sugar at a healthy balanced level. Put simply, the body stores excess blood sugar as fat, and when your blood sugar is low you sometimes long even more for sweet foods and carbohydrates.

Maintaining a healthy balance blood sugar level is vital, not only for weight, but also for energy. Many people are familiar with the GI (Glycaemic index) concept. Which measures how quickly the carbohydrate in your food raises your blood sugar. Even more important to know about is the GL (Glycaemic load) of what you are eating, which takes into account both how much carbohydrate is in each food and also how quickly the sugars in the food are released (the GI). The trick is weight control is keeping main meals to 10 GLs and snacks to 5 GLs

Optimum Nutrition For Children

Are mealtimes a battle ground in your household? Do you struggle to get your child or children to eat food that looks remotely healthy? Do they have a sixth sense about vegetables concealed in sauces and soups for example? Don't despair, you are not alone and there are some easy to implement and effective ways to get your child to eat more healthily and take more interest in their diet. These ideas are all taken from Smart Food for smart kids, the best-selling cookbook written by Patrick Holford and Fiona McDonald Joyce,  which accompanies the food for the Brain schools campaign. Recent studies have shown just how important nutrition and diet is to children for their long and short term health as well as mental and intellectual performance. So what is the secret to stress free, healthy mealtimes?

  • Let them play with their food (up to a point!) - chopsticks, blindfolds, eating foods in alphabetical order anything to deflect attention from vegetable wars and get them to eat a bit of everything.

  • Tiny titbits - Small, bite-sized chunks make meals seem more manageable

  • Bribery and corruption - praise, encouragement and healthy competition with rewards such as stickers, star charts and points are all great incentives

  • Go Shopping - get your involved in more than just the sweet selection. They could choose fruit for a smoothie or veg for a stir fry

  • Get Cooking - Children are far more likely to try a meal that they helped to prepare

  • Limit snacking - to ensure they have a good appetite at meal times and are not filling up on nutrient-devoid sugary drinks and confectionary

  • Set a good example - research shows that while a taste for meat is inherited, a sweet too the and a liking for vegetables is influenced by parent's food choices

  • Don't give up - Children's palettes change as their taste buds develop, so if your child turns their nose up at peas. persevere, as research shows that it takes an average of ten 'tastes' for a child to accept a new food

  • Attitude Shift - it is really a treat for a child to be given a sugary or additive-ridden snack or drink which sends their behaviour out of control, so that they get into trouble? Does a chocolate bar or fizzy drink every day really constitute a treat?

  • Start Early - it is much easier to prevent a poor diet than to remedy one. Once your child has got a taste for highly processed, sugary, salty and fatty foods they will be loathe to give them up

  • Subterfuge - sneak extra veg dishes by  blending or grating, add nutrients seeds to home made smoothies and mash banana into home made cakes to cut down on the butter and sugar content required. For more tips and family-friendly recipes see smart food for smart kids.
