- The Roman name of Camulodunum, by abbreviation, became the Saxon MELDUN, pronounced MAIDEN; and Maiden Greve Balk is to this day one of the boundaries of Malton.
- Malton is said to have been a place of some note in early Saxon times, and one of the residence of the Kings of Northumberland; and it was here, according to some writers, that EOMER, the assassin, attempted the life of EADWINE, who was saved by his faithful LILLA. But there is some doubt as to the locality of the occurrence. All that is known with certainty is that it took place in the royal villa on the banks of the Derwent.
- This stretch of river on the Derwent near the Old Gas House and King's Mill was known as the 'English Jordan' as Paulinus is said to have baptised Saxons here in the 7th Century.
- (Baptism was revived here between 1825-30 and again between 1863-5).
