Church Street (Norton History) On the opposite side of the road is the BAY HORSE/RAILWAY HOTEL Bay Horse changed its name in 1850 - Landlord's Philip White (1823), Thos. Wallgate (1840), Samuel Wallgate (1857), William Bosomworth (1872), James Horsley (1879), James Peter Smith (1893) Christopher Scaife (1897), George Pexton (1905), Mrs. Elizabeth Pexton (1909), William John Miller (1913), George Harfield (1921), Wltr Hall (1937).
The house and shop next to the hotel were occupied by Mr. Pearson - Tailor on the left hand side when entering was a Reading room, established March 1899 and maintained by subscription. Mr. Pearson's neighbour was Mr. John Piercy - Hairdresser. About 1870 Mr. Thomas Coates became occupier and commenced a Printing & Stationery Business until 1887 when Mr. Baker bought the business.
In 1890 Mr. W. R. Spaven of Malton bought the two houses and shop occupied by Mr. Pearson and Mr. Baker's and rebuilt the premises with Mr. Henry Seale, improved Church Street. Mr. Clifton Dixon - Tailor (1893) was tenant next door Fred Witty - Baker (1905), Hilda's Hairdressers (1937) and Mr. John Robson - Saddler (1897), had the adjoining house and shop and following his father Mr. George M. Robson - Painter & Decorator and was succeeded by H.S. Wood (1905), in the same line of business.
We now come to NORTON HOUSE occupied by Mr. Foord Newton followed by Mr. William Binnie, who had his racing establishment there and followed by Mr. R. P. Botterill - Race Horse Trainer, next shop was William Gascoine (1893), Berti Gascoigne - Watch Maker (1909), then the Hairdresser's ( Ben Paylor) and back to the Royal Oak.
THE GRIFFIN INN appeared in Church Street. Built in 1860 got its full licence in 1873 and closed in 1967. Landlords - John Eden (1879), Harry Goodhare (1897), James Walker (1905), Mrs. Elizabeth Inman (1921), A. H. Chandler (1933), John Spanton (1937).

NORTON INDUSTRIES.

Mr. T. Brand - Brickyards. The Malton Farmers' Manure Company Ltd. Messrs. Taylor Bros. - Timber Merchants. Messrs. Barr, Brown & Co., Ltd., - Timber Merchants (1909). Mill Hill Laundry employing young women.
