Built about 1720 when work was in hand making the New River navigable to the Humber. This was completed in 1723 and the bottom of Water Lane was the river head, so that all goods had to come and go via Water Lane. The name was changed to The George in about 1845. Originally, the lane was at the Yorkersgate end. The arch was thrown over in the 1880's to provide additional accommodation for the Inn's commercial visitors. It was both a Coaching and a Carriers Inn.
