  • CHANTRIES AND CHAPELS. Chantries were usually founded 'to pray for the souls' of the founder and his relatives. Malton Castle has a chantry of St. James. Any surplus of revenue which remained after the priest had been paid was used for secular purposes. Surplus revenue of the chantry of St. John the Baptist at Malton was used to maintain one arch of the town bridge.
1546
  • After the dissolution Robert Holgate, Archbishop of York founded a grammar school at the Old Malton Priory.
