- In the contest between KING STEPHEN (1135-54) and EMPRESS MAUDE, EUSTANCE FITZ-JOHN espoused the side of the latter, and delivered his castles at Alnwick and Malton to DAVID - King of Scotland, the Empress's Uncle
- The Scots placed a strong garrison in Malton Castle in 1138 and then laid waste to the surrounding country, sacking towns and villages.
- THURSTAN-Archbishop of York summoned the northern nobles with their retainers to aid him in expelling the invaders. In 1138 they invested (lay siege) and burnt the town and then besieged and captured the castle. EUSTACE retreated into Scotland, and was present in the second line of Scottish Army at the battle of the Standard, which was fought in the year 1136, about three miles from Northallerton.
- Being afterwards reconciled to the King, he returned into England, and rebuilt the town of Malton, which from that period acquired the name New Malton. (EUSTACE lived to see HENRY 2nd. ascended the throne of England, (1154-89) and was slain fighting his cause against the Welsh in 1156).
