Most are cataloged according to their original sculptors, and more than 40 of the modellers are recognised; some of them contributed many pieces, some have only a single item to their credit. Biographical information as well as diagrams of their monograms is included to aid identification.
Each example is described in detail and nearly all are accompanied by a photograph to illustrate salient points from the model profile. Enlargements are used to show specific features, and items which are available in different color forms are also illustrated. Each model is given a number grade by the author compiled from his judgment of its rarity, artistic merit, the quality of its sculpture, and its decoration; a combined “desirability factor” has been derived so that comparisons can be made. Several methods of dating individual items are introduced and those elements which may influence purchasing decisions are discussed. Sources of secondhand pieces are considered and some guidance on collecting themes is offered. Updated values are included. |
