| This book represents the changes that have taken place in Malton and Norton over the last 150 years. I am sorry to say Malton is not the bustling market and industrial town it was — this you will see in the forthcoming pages. Many changes have occurred in the community over the years, including changes inflicted on buildings by the dreaded bulldozer. Photography has proved a truly great invention, helping to preserve the past for future generations.
Malton has had a chequered history over the last 2000 years, longer in fact, as there was once a Stone Age settlement in the area. The Romans arrived in AD 71 and departed in 429 having built a fort called Derventio. The fort remained until the 1800s -when the burgess decided the poor should work for food and shelter and enlisted them to level the fort, which stood in the Orchard Fields, to create Fair or Gala Field. The Saxons called Malton 'Meldum'— pronounced 'Maiden'. In the Domesday Book it is recorded as 'Maltune', which refers to the present Old Malton village.
The village of Malton, now known as Old Malton, was given to Eustace Fitz-John, who built a castle next to the Roman fort, and also a walled town called New Malton |
The ancient Yorkshire market town of Malton has seen many changes over the years and this fascinating book sets out to illustrate some of them using 'then and now' pairs of photographs.
As well as views of the main streets and buildings there are photographs of people at work, leisure and children at school, which illustrate dramatically how differently we live today. Although many scenes demonstrate how great the changes have been, not least, for example, in the enormous loss of once familiar local businesses, it is also remarkable to see how little some areas have changed at all. The book highlights two familiar areas of life in Malton that have continued unchanged: the cattle market thrives but so too does the town's awful tendency to flooding.
All who know Malton will enjoy this nostalgic look at the town, seen through the lenses of photographers separated by up to a century. |
