L-Theanine is an amino acid found almost exclusively in green tea and is now growing in popularity as an alternative to the herb Kava Kava. Green tea is the second most popular drink in the world. Scientists now believe that both its taste and relaxing properties are attributable to its L-Theanine content. L-Theanine appears to counteract the negative effects of caffeine, an action that explains why many people find green tea to be relaxing, despite its caffeine content.
L-Theanine easily crosses the blood-brain barrier and appears to increase levels of the inhibitory neurotransmitter, gamma amino butyric acid, as well as influencing serotonin and dopamine levels. L-Theanine appears to stimulate the production of alpha brain waves creating a state of deep relaxation and mental alertness similar to that achieved through meditation, promoting a relaxed, yet alert state of mind, without sedation.
The mood stabilising properties of L-Theanine may be helpful for women with premenstrual syndrome and it has been studied in relation to cardiovascular health, where it appears to protect LDL cholesterol from oxidation and promote normal blood pressure.
