This is a member of the Allium family which also includes other popular culinary items such as onions and leeks. It is renowned for its numerous health benefits and is also rich in vitamins and minerals.
Active ingredients are thought to be the sulphur elements of garlic which includes, amongst others, allicin – which is actually also the thing that makes garlic smell so pungent. The actual garlic clove contains alliin which is an amino acid and alliinase which is an enzyme and when these two substances come together you get the active ingredient allicin. Garlic is said to be anti-septic, anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal. It also has antioxidant properties. It is however most known for its affect on circulation, blood pressure, blood thinning and cholesterol levels.
Of course garlic is available in the diet however you would need to eat large amounts to have the same effect of the supplements available today. It is available as a product in capsules, tablets and as a tincture. Standardised extracts are advisable and many supplements have the smell removed or reduced which is helpful!
