EZ Detect Colon Disease Test by Personal Screening from £13.50
The bowel screening test measures blood present in your stool (faeces). If there is a large amount of blood in your stool you will probably notice this when you go to the toilet. However, small amounts of blood may be too small to see with the naked eye. The bowel screening test is able to detect very small amounts of blood. The test gives a simple positive or negative answer. Although it is not normal to have blood in your stool, a positive result does not mean that you have bowel cancer, as there are many other conditions which may cause bleeding in the bowel. Most causes of bleeding are not serious. This test measures the blood present in your stool (faeces) by using a chemical reaction to detect haemoglobin, a red pigment present in blood. If haemoglobin is present at a certain level, dye on a special test paper will turn blue. A positive result means that the test has detected blood in your stool. A negative result means that the test has not found any blood in your stool. The test does not tell you how much blood is in your stool, only whether or not any blood has been detected
This bowel screening test does not diagnose bowel cancer - only your GP or a specialist doctor can do that. However, it may help to detect bowel cancer at an early stage, before the cancer causes other symptoms. At this stage, treatment for cancer is more likely to be effective. Tests like these which help detect diseases at an early stage, before any other symptoms appear are known as screening tests.
A screening test for bowel cancer which detects blood in the stool is useful because: - blood in the stool can be an early sign of bowel cancer, small amounts of bleeding are not often seen with the naked eye, if bowel cancer is detected early on, before other symptoms are noticed, treatment is more likely to be successful. No screening is completely effective at detecting illness at an early stage. If you have symptoms which you are worried about, it is important that you consult your doctor. This test should not replace a consultation with your own doctor.
Most people who have blood in their stool do not have bowel cancer, but instead can have one of the many other conditions which cause bleeding into the bowel. These include: - haemorrhoids, ulcers, inflammation of the large bowel (colitis), diverticultis, irritation of the digestive system from certain drugs, such as aspirin, non-cancerous growths.
