This is a new healthcare supplement containing the active ingredient mastic gum. Mastic gum is a natural resin from the Pistacia lentiscus tree which is found on the Island of Chios in Greece. It contains a number of active ingredients including masticonic, metastannic and masticolic acids. This is a species native to arid, subtropical climates. The Pistacia lentiscus is an evergreen tree which grows 2-4 metres in height. It grows slowly and lives for 50-60 years and tends to be bush-like, which makes tapping the resin difficult, therefore trees in cultivation are pruned to encourage stem development. The mature plants generally consist of one or two thick contorted stems with an umbrella-shaped crown. Cultivated trees are tapped from six years old in June or July of every year. Short shallow incisions are cut a few millimetres into the trunk of the tree, starting from the lower parts of the tree and working upwards.
Further cuts are then made at weekly intervals over five to six weeks. A mature tree can yield up to 400 grams of mastic resin each year. In early September, when the mastic resin has solidified, the collection begins. The larger pieces or 'Pittes' are collected first and this takes place in the early morning as the heat of the day causes the mastic resin to become soft and difficult to collect. The mastic is collected with a special tool called a ‘timitiri’ and it is put into small baskets. The mastic resin is then cleaned and granulated prior to its export and the production of mastic gum capsules.
