The Powered root of the Marshmallow Plant has a high mucilage content which may soothe and care for the mucosal membranes in the respiratory and digestive tracts. The Marshmallow is a traditional English country plant, found growing naturally in damp marshy places. It has been used in medicine for thousands of years and also has a long history as a food. Its therapeutic effects are due to a type of sugar called mucilage, which is reported to coat, soothe and heal irritation of the digestive system and also has an anti-inflammatory effect on the mouth and gastric ulcers. In the respiratory system, mucilage acts as a soothing expectorant and can soothe dry coughs and irritated throats.
