Vitamin C 1000mg Prolonged Release

Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble vitamin that is necessary for normal growth and development. This means that the body does not store it, and excess amounts of the vitamin leave the body through the urine. Unlike most mammals, humans do not have the ability to make their own vitamin C. Therefore, we must obtain vitamin C through our diet on a daily basis to replenish reserves.

Vitamin C is required for the growth and repair of tissues in all parts of your body. It is necessary to form collagen, an important protein used to make skin, scar tissue, tendons, ligaments, and blood vessels. Vitamin C is essential for the healing of wounds, and for the repair and maintenance of cartilage, bones, gums and teeth.

Vitamin C also plays an important role in the synthesis of the neurotransmitter, adrenaline. Neurotransmitters are critical to brain function and are known to affect mood. In addition, vitamin C is required for the synthesis of carnitine, a small molecule that is essential for the transport of fat to cellular organelles called mitochondria, for conversion to energy. Recent research also suggests that vitamin C is involved in the metabolism of cholesterol to bile acids, which may have implications for blood cholesterol levels and the incidence of gallstones. Vitamin C plays an important part in the absorption of iron - a mineral necessary for the formation of red blood cells as well as playing a role in the utilisation of folic acid in the body.
