Triamterene

Triamterene is a potassium-sparing diuretic (in other words, it inhibits the urinary excretion of potassium). Diuretics increase urinary water loss from the body and are used to treat high blood pressure, congestive heart failure, and some kidney or liver conditions. Triamterene is available as a single agent and in combination products.
- Keep up your calcium levels Triamterene may deplete or interfere with calcium absorption or function, so take 500 to 1,000 mg of calcium daily to maintain normal levels of this valuable mineral in your body.
- Take folic acid supplements while taking this medication Diuretics appear to lower folic acid levels in the body, so taking supplements supplying 400 to 1,000 mcg per day may help reduce the likelihood and/or severity of a potential side effect caused by the medication.
- Check with your physician before…
Taking potassium supplements and/or stopping or restricting your dietary salt intake.
- Take triamterene if you are pregnant or may be pregnant This medication should not be taken during pregnancy. Ask your doctor before using when breast-feeding.
- Take diuretic herbs when taking this medication Triamterene mixed with buchu, cleavers, dandelion, gravel root, horsetail, juniper, magnesium, or uva ursi may cause undesirable or dangerous results.
