Buying and storing tips

For those on a low-sodium diet, soaking string cheese in water will remove some of the salt content. Like many semi-soft cheeses, it can be kept refrigerated for up to two weeks.

Varieties

String cheese is available as packages of individual cream-coloured rods, although sometimes it comes in a braided shape. It is also available in smoked and unsmoked varieties, or flavoured with garlic or onion.
