What are Echinacea 500mg tablets for?
Echinacea species are perennials which belong to the Aster family and which originate in eastern North America. Traditionally used for a range of infections and malignancies, the roots and herb (above ground parts) of echinacea species have attracted recent scientific interest due to 'immune stimulant' properties. Echinacea is a herb that may help the body defend itself from the viruses that cause colds, sore throats and the flu.
Three species of Echinacea are used in medicine: purpurea, angustifolia and pallida.
It contains flavonoids, glycoproteins and a variety of other active components which
are thought to stimulate the immune system. Echinacea purpurea herb is believed
to be the most potent Echinacea species for this indication. Extracts can be derived
from the whole plant, roots or flowers and other plant extracts or homeopathic compounds
may be added.
Echinacea 500mg from HealthAid contains Echinacea Purpurea and its active ingredients
are polyphenols.
The polyphenols includes caffeic acid derivatives of which are:
- Echinacoside- has antibiotic activity, found mostly in the root of the Echinacea plant
- Cichoric acid- which is an immune stimulator with highest concentrations in Purpurea
- Chlorogenic acid- has the immune properties too, which are found in the leaves and stems
- Cynarin – also has immune building properties, which is found in the roots.
Echinacea supports the immune system. Several constituents in Echinacea team together to increase the production and activity of white blood cells (lymphocytes and macrophages).
- The three major groups of constituents responsible are alkylamides/polyacetylenes, caffeic acid derivatives, and polysaccharides.
- Echinacea also increases production of interferon, an important part of the body’s response to viral infection such as colds and the flu.
- Echinacea is believed to work primarily by activating white blood cells, as mentioned above. It has been specifically shown to activate an important class of white blood cells known as natural killer cells.
