Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted disease that is caused by an infection in the vaginal or uterine tract caused by the chlamydia trachomatis bacteria. Chlamydia infection has recently become very common especially among young adults and teenagers. It is thought that around 20% of young women may have a Chlamydia infection. In women, if left untreated, Chlamydia can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, cervicitis, urethritis, and endometriosis and sterility.
What is Chlamydia Trachomatis Infection? Chlamydia is the commonest sexually transmitted bacterial infection which affects about 1 in 20 women overall. Women under 25 are at highest risk. The bacteria causing the infection called Chlamydia trachomatis is passed on through unprotected sexual intercourse. Not everyone who catches Chlamydia will have symptoms but if you have unprotected sex with someone who has Chlamydia you run the risk of being infected. This may result in: 1) Development of the symptoms. 2) No symptoms but you may carry the organism and pass it on to someone else or 3) Chronic infection where the organism may cause long- term complications without any sign of acute symptoms.
In women, symptoms, if present are often 'non-specific' i.e. they can be mistaken for something else. These symptoms include changes in vaginal discharge, pain on passing urine and spotting between periods or bleeding after sex. Chlamydia can infect the uterus and block the fallopian tubes, causing infertility, even in the absence of acute symptoms. Sometimes women get pain in the lower abdomen, indicating possible pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), which may be caused by Chlamydia.
If men get symptoms these range from an obvious discharge from the urethra (pipe) in the penis and/or severe pain on passing urine, to very mild irritation at the end of the urethra. Men can suffer from swollen testicles as a result of this infection (epididymitis, or epididymo-orchitis). Also Chlamydia is associated with arthritis in some men. Many men get symptoms which are mild and resolve without any treatment, but they may still pass the infection to their partner(s).
