Alpha Lipoic Acid (also known as thioctic acid) is a vitamin-like antioxidant, which is produced naturally in the body in small amounts. Alpha-lipoic acid is mainly obtained from the diet, red meat, spinach and brewer’s yeast being good sources. Alpha-lipoic acid acts in conjunction with the B vitamins thiamine, riboflavin, niacin and pantothenic acid to convert sugars and fat into energy within the body. The body converts some alpha-lipoic acid into di-hydrolipoic acid. Both are powerful antioxidants. Alpha-lipoic acid is known as the ‘universal antioxidant’, as it protects both the aqueous (water) and lipid (fat) compartments of cells from free radical damage.
Free radicals are chemicals, which are created by our own metabolism, but can also be generated by exposure to environmental pollution, smoking, alcohol, UV light, etc. Alpha-lipoic acid also speeds the removal of glucose from the bloodstream, enhancing insulin function and reducing insulin resistance. Alpha-Lipoic Acid is available only in one form. Therefore, it is the way the product is manufactured that makes the difference.
