Starflower Oil. A dietary supplement containing a high content of gamma linolenic acid (GLA). GLA is an omega 6 essential polyunsaturated fatty Acid (PUFA) and is an important component of cell membranes. Many food sources do not contain significant amounts of GLA. The most abundant sources include evening primrose oil, borage seed oil and blackcurrant seed oil. Some GLA can be manufactured within the body, but this process can be disrupted by many factors, including smoking, certain medications, alcohol consumption and a diet high in saturated fats etc. GLA is converted by the body into hormone-like compounds called prostaglandins, which occur in several forms which can be either pro-inflammatory or anti-inflammatory. Increasing dietary intake of GLA, in combination with Omega 3 fatty acids, generates more anti-inflammatory prostaglandins, which can inhibit the development of autoimmune/inflammatory disorders and can also block the action of inflammatory prostaglandins that can cause other health disorders. GLA is also important for normal immune function.
Bio-Glandin 25 is so called because it contains 25% GLA from borage oil. Other products available on the market may contain as little as 8% GLA. Until recently GLA supplements were derived from evening primrose oil, but borage oil has subsequently been shown to contain 2 to 3 times the levels of GLA. A low degree of peroxidation is essential to the quality and safety of nutritional products containing fatty acids. Bio-Glandin 25 is constantly being tested for its peroxide value. Pharma Nord requires all products to have a low peroxide number during the entire shelf life of the product well below the acceptable level of 10meq/kg. Pure borage oil, with a maximum content of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) is used. The capsules are produced under pharmaceutical control. The raw materials comply with government regulations in the EC and Scandinavia. Testing ensures that the raw materials are in accordance with their certificates of analysis.
Ingredients: 500 mg of pure Borago Officinalis oil (Medicinal Borage), Gelatine, Glycerol, Purified water.
Nutritional: Each capsule contains 500mg of borage seed oil, equivalent to 474mg of fatty acids, of which 118mg is GLA. Until recently GLA supplements were produced from evening primrose oil, but borage oil has now been shown to contain 2-3 times the level of GLA.
Directions: The recommended intake for Bio-Glandin 25 is 1-2 capsules per day.
Health Warnings: Epileptics taking anticonvulsants medication should not take Bio-Glandin 25. Pregnant or lactating women and those on medication should consult a doctor before taking nutritional supplements. Discontinue use if adverse reactions occur.
