A dietary fibre supplement. Dietary fibre is defined as material of plant origin, resistant to breakdown by digestive enzymes until reaching the large intestine. Dietary fibre comprised an extensive part of a typical diet in the 20th Century, but intakes are reduced in modern times as diets with a high level of processed foods contain little or no dietary fibre. Deficiency in dietary fibre is associated with an increased risk for the development of colon cancer, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. The components of dietary fibre have a filling effect they delay gastric emptying and slow down the absorption of food, thereby reducing the ‘sugar rush’ often experienced after a meal. It also reduces intestinal transit time and increases the number of beneficial micro-flora in the large intestine.
Dietary fibre can reduce blood lipid (fat) levels by attaching itself to cholesterol and promoting its excretion from the body. It can also assist in the removal of toxins from the wall of the bowel and provide an energy source for beneficial bacteria within the colon.
There are many fibre preparations available on the market. Bio-Fiber has the advantage of containing the main four types of dietary fibre: Lignin, Pectin, Cellulose and Hemicellulose, therefore giving optimal health benefit. Health Warnings: Dietary fibre is generally well-tolerated. However, if the body is not used to a fibre-rich diet, abdominal discomfort (bloating, flatulence) may result. It is recommended, therefore, to increase the intake gradually. An increased intake should be accompanied by an increased water intake, otherwise constipation may be experienced. Pregnant or lactating women and those on medication should consult a doctor before taking nutritional supplements. Discontinue use if adverse reactions occur.
