CLA is a polyunsaturated fatty acid that has a number of important roles within the body. CLA may help to maintain an optimum balance between lean muscle tissue an body fat. CLA may also help to maintain a healthy cardiovascular system and a healthy immune system. CLA levels in food are reduced by modern farming methods, and by food processing. CLA is converted within the body into eicosanoids, hormone-like substances that regulate the relative amounts of muscle and fat deposition, enabling the body to alter composition by reducing fat levels whilst maintaining or increasing muscle mass. Eicosanoids also regulate blood vessel leakage, and inflammatory and immune cell behaviour. Since dietary intake is the primary determinant of fatty acids entering eicosanoids generating pathways, there is a direct link between the balance of fats in the diet and the inflammatory response.
