Beta-carotene is a member of the carotenoid family of plant pigments, which are responsible for the red, yellow and orange colourings of certain fruits and vegetables. Beta-carotene is also known as pro-vitamin A, as it is converted by the body into Vitamin A. The body will only convert what is needed and the rest is excreted by the kidneys. Vitamin A is usually sourced from animal tissues, particularly animal and fish liver and dairy products. Beta-carotene is a vegetarian source - found in plants, especially carrots. Beta-Carotene is a potent antioxidant, protecting the body from the damaging effects of free radicals (free radicals are chemicals, which are created by our own metabolism, but can also be generated by exposure to pollution, smoking, alcohol, UV light etc). Free radicals have been implicated in the pathogenesis (cause) of many health disorders, including cardiovascular disease, cancer and poor eye health. Beta-carotene and Vitamin A are required for: normal growth and development, tissue maintenance and repair, bone and tooth formation. Beta-carotene can also protect the skin from the effects of exposure to UV light.
Other carotinoids, e.g. alpha-carotene, lutein and cryptozanthin, are also converted to vitamin A, but about half as efficiently as beta-carotene. There are many Beta-Carotene preparations on the market. However, Bio-Carotene is specially designed to withstand stomach acidity in order to ensure optimum absorption in the small intestine. Many other preparations lose effectiveness when passing through the stomach. The capsules are produced under pharmaceutical control. The raw materials comply with government regulations in the EC and Scandinavia. Testing ensures that raw materials are in accordance with their certificates of analysis.
Ingredients: Vitamin A, from beta-carotene (pro-vitamin A), Soya bean Oil, Gelatine, Glycerol.
Nutritional: Each capsule of Bio-Carotene contains 9mg of beta-carotene, in a stable and easily absorbed form. Unlike vitamin A, which may be harmful in excessive amounts, it is virtually impossible to overdose with beta-carotene, since any excess is eliminated from the body.
Directions: An intake of 1 capsule per day of Bio-Carotene is recommended by Pharma Nord.
Health Warnings: Beta-Carotene cannot be properly converted into vitamin A by diabetics, those with hypothyroidism or severe liver malfunction. These people cannot rely on beta-carotene as a sole source of vitamin A activity. Hyper-carotenaemia, a purely cosmetic condition characterised by the skin turning slightly orange, may occur at doses of 30mg daily and above. This is reversible upon stopping beta-carotene supplementation. Beta-carotene is generally well tolerated with a very low risk of toxicity. In contrast with vitamin A (excess intake of which may cause liver damage or birth defects), it is virtually impossible to overdose with beta-carotene, as the body eliminates any of the latter substance that is surplus to requirements. Pregnant or lactating women and those on medication should consult a doctor before taking nutritional supplements. Discontinue use if adverse reactions occur.
