L-Carnitine is a naturally occurring amino acid like substance that is synthesized in the body from the amino acid lysine.
Carnitine is produced in the liver and kidneys and is stored in tissues that use fat as a source of energy, i.e. heart and skeletal muscle. Carnitine is responsible for the transport of long chain fatty acids into mitochondria (where energy is produced within cells). Carnitine is required for optimal heart and skeletal muscle function as these tissues utilise high amounts of energy, particularly from fatty acids. Carnitine is present in many foods and high concentrations can be found in red meats, such as beef and lamb. In comparison, there is little or no carnitine in white meats and vegetables, so vegetarians are at risk of deficiency, particularly if their diets are low in lysine. Athletes are also at risk of deficiency, as the amount of carnitine used in times of physical exercise may exceed the amount produced naturally.
Bio-Carnitine is perfectly balanced to give optimum absorption, as it contains L-carnitine, which closely resembles the amino acid in the body. The D form of Carnitine contained in some supplements may interfere with the beneficial actions of L-carnitine. The capsules are produced under pharmaceutical control.
