Vitamin C (also known as ascorbic acid) is an unstable water-soluble vitamin which is present in the ‘make up’ of almost all plants and animals. Vitamin C must be obtained from dietary sources as it can not be synthesized by the human body. Most of the Vitamin C we consume comes from fruit and vegetables. However, it is very quickly lost from foods depending on how food is processed, stored and cooked. Levels of Vitamin C are further depleted by the effects of smoking, alcohol consumption, as well as by certain medications, i.e. anti-coagulants, anti-depressants and oral contraceptives. A deficiency in Vitamin C can result in scurvy and is also associated with poor wound healing, bone fragility and frequent infections.
Vitamin C is the primary water soluble antioxidant found within the human body, protecting cells from damage by free radicals. (Free radicals are chemicals which are created by our own metabolism, as well as from environmental factors such as smoking, air pollution, UV light exposure, etc.) It also acts synergistically with Vitamin E, a lipid soluble Vitamin, to protect cell membranes from free radical damage, which are known to be the cause of many diseases. There are many vitamin C preparations available on the market. Bio-C-Vitamin has been especially designed to withstand stomach acidity in order to ensure optimum absorption in the small intestine. Many other preparations lose effectiveness when passing through the stomach. Bio-C-Vitamin is also in a buffered non-acidic form. The Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) for Vitamin C is 60mg per day for adults, 120mg per day for smokers. This amount is purely to avoid deficiency and has long been viewed as inadequate. The optimal intake for Vitamin C has been estimated to be at least 750mg per day. The capsules are produced under pharmaceutical control. The raw materials comply with government regulations in the EC and Scandinavia. Testing ensures that the raw materials are in accordance with their certificates of analysis.
Ingredients: C Vitamin, Calcium, (Calcium Ascorbate), Microcrystalline cellulose, Magnesium stearate, Silicon dioxide, Hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose, Talc, Titanium dioxide
Nutritional: each tablet contains 750mg of vitamin C, equivalent to that contained in 1.5 kg of fresh oranges. Bio-C-Vitamin is based on calcium ascorbate, an easily absorbed and less acidic form of vitamin C, which does not disturb the normal pH of the stomach.
Directions: Pharma Nord recommends an intake of 1-2 tablets per day of bio-C-Vitamin.
Health Warnings: The toxicity of Vitamin C is extremely low with intakes of 1000mg being safely taken. Intakes in excess of 2000mg per day may cause gastro-intestinal disturbance in susceptible individuals and may also interfere with absorption of calcium and selenium. Vitamin C facilitates the absorption of iron from the diet and, therefore, high doses should not be taken by those with iron overload syndromes such as thalassemia and hemochromatosis. High doses of Vitamin C should not be taken by those susceptible to kidney stones. Pregnant or lactating women and those on medication should consult a doctor before taking nutritional supplements. Discontinue use if adverse reactions occur.
