Ginkgo Biloba, also known as the maidenhair tree, is one of the world’s oldest living tree species. The benefits of Ginkgo biloba can be attributed to two groups of active compounds: flavone glycosides and terpene lactones. Ginkgo flavone glycosides make up 24% of the extract and are primarily responsible for Ginkgo Biloba’s antioxidant activity and may also mildly inhibit platelet aggregation (blood stickiness). These in combination may help prevent circulatory problems. May support the brain and central nervous system.
Terpene lactones make up 6% of the extract, they are associated with increasing circulation to the extremities and brain, thus enhancing tissue utilisation of oxygen and glucose and protecting tissues from free radical attack. Ginkgo biloba is best taken in as 100 mg standardised extract containing 24 mg of Ginkgo flavone-glycosides and 6 mg terpene lactones, the active ingredients in Bio-Biloba. A study (2004) comparing the relative levels of in vitro antioxidant activity in Ginkgo biloba samples from different commercial suppliers, found that of the 18 products investigated, the highest level of antioxidant activity was obtained for Pharma Nord Bio-Biloba (Pharma Nord, Morpeth, UK) tablets (p< 0.05, Dunnett’s statistical test). The capsules are produced under pharmaceutical control. The raw materials comply with government regulations in the EC and Scandinavia.
